Voice chat — a guide for parents

What voice chat on this server is, who can hear your child, and exactly how to report a problem.

What voice chat is here

This community runs a dinosaur survival game called The Isle. Players can optionally install a voice program (Mumble) so that people whose dinosaurs are near each other in the game can talk, like being within earshot in real life. Someone far away in the game cannot hear them.

Voice is optional. The game is fully playable without it, nothing in the game is lost by not using it, and it costs nothing — it is never a paid feature.

The stated minimum age for voice is 13. Players confirm this when they set voice up. Other players are strangers of any age, exactly as in any online game with open voice.

Who can hear whom

  • Only players near each other in the game can hear each other. Distance fades the volume until it is silent.
  • Voice access follows the game: someone who leaves the game server loses access to the proximity channels.
  • Moderators can always see who is in which voice channel, but nobody can secretly listen — a moderator who joins voice is visible to everyone there, like any other participant.
  • Nothing is recorded, stored, or transcribed. There are no recordings for anyone to leak, request, or misuse.

How to report a problem

If your child hears something that worries you — an adult being inappropriate, bullying, threats, anything — report it. The report asks for the other player's Steam ID (your child can see it in the game's player list), a category, and what happened.

Reports go straight to the moderation queue with a published target of action within 24 hours. A ban from voice applies to the game server and the community Discord at the same time — a person removed from one is removed from all three.

Make a report

Because voice is never recorded, moderators act on reports rather than recordings. A prompt report with the player's name or Steam ID and roughly when it happened is genuinely enough to act on.

Practical settings

  • Your child can mute any player locally at any time. The muted person is not told.
  • Voice can simply not be installed. Players without it are at no disadvantage the rules recognise.
  • Questions this page does not answer are welcome in the community Discord, or through the privacy page, which explains exactly what data the platform holds.
